FIRST BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL BALINT GROUP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Applications are invited to attend the first International Balint Group Leadership Conference which will be held at Faelleshuset (The Shared House) Conference Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark from 28-30th April 2011. The conference is convened by the International Balint Federation (IBF) in association with the Danish Balint Society. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for Balint Group leaders from different countries to study Balint Group leadership together. There will be an opportunity to exchange ideas and to participate in intensive ‘training cum research’ workshops on leadership. Countries affiliated to IBF have different histories and traditions of how Balint Leadership training and selection has developed. IBF has therefore decided to initiate a regular workshop/conference for leaders from different countries to share experience and work together on leadership issues, to stimulate research and to begin providing a framework for thinking about leadership that will be useful for national societies. It is intended that these conferences will be held every two years (usually in autumn) and alternate with IBF international congresses.

Staff Team: Michel Delbrouck (Belgium); Andrew Elder (UK); Andre Matalon (Israel); Don Nease (USA); Heide Otten (Germany) (IBF); Tove Mathiesen and Jorgen Strobech (Danish Balint Society).

Organising Team

Information for Participants: The conference will be held in English and is intended for Balint Group Leaders from all countries affiliated to IBF. It is envisaged that there will be approx 40 participants and that they will include:

  • experienced leaders

  • those newly or recently accredited as leaders

  • those currently gaining experience prior to accreditation

  • those interested in gaining experience with a view to later accreditation (and supported in this by their national societies).

  • those leaders (established or interested in gaining further experience) who wish to attend but do not have a national society and are individual members of IBF.

Participants must commit themselves to staying for the whole event.

Participants must come with a current clinical case in mind.

Reservation of places: Every society will be guaranteed at least two places at the conference which will be reserved until February 10th 2011. All those interested in applying are encouraged to register at the outset. It will only be in the unlikely event that all countries take up their reserved places that the organisers may have to limit places to two per country.

The conference will be organised in small group workshops whose membership will be consistent throughout the conference and who will have an opportunity to work together for 5 one-and-a-half hour sessions (see timetable). We will aim to have 10-12 participants and two members of the staff team in each workshop. The workshops will focus on the role of the leaders in one of two different ways (A and B see below). If you have a preference for attending either A or B, please state this. There will also be three semi-structured plenary meetings which will include an opportunity for brief presentations and sharing of ideas from the workshops (see timetable).

The overall aim will be to provide an intensive but coherent experience of working together in an international group on the problems of Balint leadership.

Workshop A (changing leadership): YES/NO

Workshop B (leadership remaining same): YES/NO

Don’t mind/No preference…(please ring)

Workshop A: Changing leadership: This workshop will select a leadership pair for each of the five sessions. Thus it will provide an opportunity for a greater number of leaders to lead the group but (probably) only for discussion of one case for each pair of leaders. It will allow observation of a range of different approaches to leadership.

Workshop B: Leadership remaining same: This workshop will keep the same leadership pair throughout the five sessions, thus giving an opportunity to observe the development of relationships within a working group and between a Balint group and its leaders.

It may not be possible to suit all preferences but we will try to do so.
